A free workshop, a new online self-paced course, and the latest on my Liminal Minds course.
1. Free workshop!
I’m leading a FREE Zoom workshop this coming Thursday July 13 at 7pm EST:
Poetry About a Difficult Past: One Approach
I’ll describe a step-by-step process for writing a poetry book about trauma or a difficult past. This process worked for me, and might work for others. The workshop will contain zero triggering material; just process-based discussions. I'll be making up silly material for the examples to keep it light. This is the most popular workshop I've given, so I wanted to offer it again. Free; registration required.
2. New Self-Paced Online Course!
Registration is now open for my second long-form course:
Life After Birth: How to Mentor a Newborn Poem
***The course will launch officially on Friday June 14.***
This online, self-paced course is a one-on-one mentorship with me on poetry revision. This is an exercise-intensive, feedback-heavy course.You’ll have the opportunity to try a multitude of approaches for revising a poem—and to receive detailed feedback from me. The topics and approaches covered include:
* Identifying and describing what’s working and what isn’t
* Finding the thesis of a poem
* Finding the poem within a text
* Expansion & contraction
* Showing & telling
* Consistency
* Play
* Building a bespoke geography
* Incorporating a volta
* Choosing a title
* Being intentional
Each unit introduces a topic or approach, then challenges you to revise one of your own poems using that particular approach. If you choose the full version of the course, come prepared with about 14 poems to revise, or bring just one or a handful of poems and revise it/them 14 different ways.
You’ll walk away with a rich set of revision tools and potentially a whole swathe of revised poems.
To make the course financially accessible, there are two versions, both of which include some amount of feedback. The fees for each version are along a sliding scale, and there is a waitlist for free spots. See more details and pricing structure on the registration page.
3. Liminal Minds Course
Our Liminal Minds: Writing From Our Own Galactic Outer Rims—my other online self-paced course—is going strong!! And thanks to the generosity of many participants who were able to pay more than full price, I’ve already been able to offer 5 fully funded spots, and the waitlist for funded spots is empty as of the time I’m writing this. This mutual aid between poets makes me so happy!!!
For more detailed info on this course, see my June post—
Or here’s the short version: It’s a course exploring how to generate writing spontaneously through techniques like improvisation, “trance” speech, and hypnagogia. These kinds of approaches can limber up your creative voice(s) and help you take back your creative process from the twin beasts of perfectionism and writer’s block.
